History

The city was founded in 1542 by the franciscan monk Fray Juan de San Miguel, who baptized the place witn the name of San Miguel el Grande. The town distinguished prominently during the Independence war of Mexico. The General Ignacio Allende, born in San Miguel, was a key leader in the independence war against Spain.

 

In 1926 was declared historical monument by the Mexican Government, in 1982 it became National monument and historic zone, and on July 7th. 2008 San Miguel was rewarded with the denomination as human kind patrimony, rank acquired with the unanimous approval of the UNESCO, which ensures that its development in the historical district is restricted to preserve its colonial character.  The place is famous Worldwide because of its temperate climate, thermal waters and  architecture, San Miguel de Allende has attracted a great community of foreigner residents, specially from the United States of America.
