Founded in 1542 by Father Juan de San Miguel, a Franciscan monk, originally known as San Miguel el Grande. The town played a prominent role during the Mexican War of Independence. In 1826, the city was renamed San Miguel de Allende in honor of General Ignacio Allende, born in San Miguel, who was a key leader in Mexico’s independence from Spain.
